|
The Bookcliffs and the Green River border Castle Country
on the north and east. Collectively, this is the largest
remaining wild and primitive area in the 48 contiguous states.
Desolation and Gray Canyons of the Green River are known
internationally as a premiere desert rafting experience with
numerous rapids ranging for Class II to Class IV, depending
on water levels. Numerous pre-historic and historic sites
can be visited via the river. |

Indian Canyon and the Avantiquin are (U.S. 191) comprise a very pleasant scenic drive on an all weather, paved highway. In season, this route is noted for fall colors and cross country skiing at the pass where the highway crosses into the Unita Basin. A gravel road cuts off to the east from this route to Nine Mile Canyon for an interesting circle tour when conditions permit. High clearance vehicles are recommended for this loop.
The more remote Bookcliff areas offer scenic, primitive
back country. 4-wheel drive is recommended. Primary
access is through Cottonwood Canyon from Nine Mile Canyon,
or up and over Bruin Point from the towns of East Carbon
and Sunnyside. |
